Author Steven Scragg joins me for a record fourth appearance on the Outside Write podcast to discuss his new book, In the Heat of the Midday Sun: The Indelible Story of the 1986 World Cup. A bit of disclosure: It’s my favourite World Cup – it had everything, and I’m delighted that Steven was the first to write a book about the story of the tournament.
We discuss how Mexico was drafted in to stage the tournament after Colombia couldn’t fulfil its host status. We naturally get *that* game between Argentina and England out of the way and look at some of the lesser-known stories from the tournament, such as South Korea’s rise, why Uruguay did not deliver on its favourite’s tag, and more.
