Podcast: Football in Brazil with Andrew Downie

Please share:
Ipanema Beach during the 2014 World Cup

My guest is Andrew Downie, author of Doctor Socrates: Footballer, Philosopher, Legend and The Greatest Show on Earth: The Inside Story of the Legendary 1970 World Cup. We are talking about football in Brazil, from its roots to the present day. We major on the 1970 World Cup, possibly the peak of O Jogo Bonito (the beautiful game), and discuss the great sides of 1982 and ’86. We look at Sócrates’ influence on and off the pitch, and discuss how Brazil’s more pragmatic approach in 1994 and 2002 brought home further world titles.

We then take a look at the domestic game and get Andrew’s tips for groundhopping in Brazil.
