Podcast: The Intercontinental Cup

Please share:

I welcome Daniel Williamson back onto the podcast to discuss his new book, When Two Worlds Collide: The Intercontinental Cup Years. We look back at some of the highlights – and lowlights – of the often controversial play-off between European and South American champions to decide the world’s top club side.

Daniel talks us through the development of the tournament, from inception to its fractious years of the late sixties and seventies, to its reinvention in neutral Tokyo. We look back at Pelé’s Intercontinental Cup performances, the infamous ‘Battle of Montevideo’, and the emergence of the tournament’s successor, the FIFA Club World Cup.
