My guest is David Hartrick, author of a new book Silver Linings on Bobby Robson’s time as England manager (1982-90), which coincided with a tumultuous time for English football both on and off the pitch. Hooliganism rife at home and abroad, and there were three major stadium disasters during this period. In addition, Robson had to deal with a relentless media and, of course, the hand of God.
We look at the extraordinary talent that England had during that eight year span, which included Bryan Robson, Glenn Hoddle, John Barnes, Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne, and ask why it failed to deliver silverware.
Disclaimer: David’s book is out via the same publisher as mine, Origin Stories.
