Podcast: The ‘Match of the Century’

The Mighty Magyars are immortalised in this Budapest street mural.

England versus Hungary at Wembley in November 1953 was dubbed ‘The Match of the Century’. The ‘Mighty Magyars’ ran out 6-3 winners in a game that many saw to signal the confirmation that football’s ‘mother country’, England, was not at the top of the world roundball order and Olympic champions Hungary were.

My guest Matt Clough has written a book about the Match of the Century and joins me to give context around the game, the background, buildup, key moments and legacy.

I release a new podcast every Monday, so be sure to subscribe on your preferred podcast platform. You can find Football Travel by Outside Write on AppleSpotifyStitcherPlayer.FM and Anchor. Look for it in Google Podcasts too. I’d really appreciate a rating or view if you like what I’m doing as it helps others discover the podcast.
