Podcast: The History of Argentina v Uruguay

Argentina fans gather on Ipanema Beach during World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

The world’s oldest international rivalry outside of the UK and Ireland is 7,000 miles (11,000 km) away down in the River Plate – Argentina v Uruguay.

We welcome Argentinian football historian, Esteban Bekerman, onto the podcast to discuss the rivalry between Argentina and Uruguay, and its legacy in promoting football across South America. How critical were the early encounters – especially in forming the Copa America – and key matches in the 1920s? And when did Brazil eclipse Uruguay as Argentina’s chief rival?
