We’re joined by serial groundhopper Matt Rayns for a tour around Germany’s most populous region, Nordrhein-Westfalen – North-Rhine Westphalia – which is home to 18 million people and a whole host of football clubs.

We discuss the big names – Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen and FC Schalke 04 – and also some of the other teams in the region, like 1.FC Köln, Fortuna Düsseldorf and VfL Bochum.

This region is great for groundhopping as there’s always something going on in the top two divisions and regional leagues. Other Nordrhein-Westfalen clubs include Arminia Bielefeld, MSV Duisburg, Alemannia Aachen, Rot-Weiß Essen and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, Fortuna Köln and SC Paderborn.

You can follow Matt’s various groundhopping chronicles over on his Facebook page.

  1. Nice one! That part of Germany is quite amazing and you can easily get 3 games per weekend! Not more, because you also have to enjoy the old towns from Dusseldorf and Koln, as you said! Good thing to listen, guys!

    • Thanks Andrei – glad to hear. I can’t wait to go back and do the smaller clubs.
