My guest is Richard McBrearty from the excellent Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park, Glasgow. We discuss his research into the early game in Glasgow and the influential role of Queen’s Park FC in promoting the Association rules game at a time when other codes, most notably Rugby, were popular.
We also look at the ‘Three Hampdens’ and also the growth of Irish football clubs within Scotland. If you’re interested in early Scottish football, please check out the Scottish Football Origins website, and if you’re interested in the wider history of the growth of the game worldwide – and there’s a lot of Scots involved here, too – then please check out my book, Origin Stories: The Pioneers Who Took Football to the World.
We release a new podcast every Monday, so be sure to subscribe on your preferred podcast platform. We’re on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, Player.FM and Anchor. Look for us in Google Podcasts too.
